The film follows the Jackal as he meticulously plans the assassination, from acquiring false passports and disguises to constructing a custom-made sniper's rifle that can be disassembled and easily concealed. The French authorities, aware of the threat through intelligence leaks, desperately try to identify and stop him. They assign the investigation to the unassuming but brilliant Commissioner Claude Lebel (Michael Lonsdale), a dedicated detective who must track down an assassin whose face and identity are a complete mystery. The narrative expertly cuts between the Jackal's careful preparations, often shown in near-silence, and Lebel's frustratingly slow progress, building immense tension as the clock ticks down to the target date—Liberation Day. The plot takes a personal turn when the Jackal, finding his intended hiding spot observed by police, seduces a French countess (Delphine Seyrig) to use her apartment as a vantage point. As the net closes in, the film drives toward a famously tense and unexpected finale where cat and mouse finally meet face-to-face.
