Autumn Variations arrived with little warning. On 24 August 2023, Sheeran took to social media to announce the album, revealing a unique creative spark. He explained that the project was inspired by a conversation with his father and brother, who introduced him to a piece of classical music history: Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations . The classical composition from 1899 is famous because each of its 14 movements serves as a musical portrait of one of Elgar's close friends. Inspired, Sheeran decided to do the same. He wrote 14 songs, each capturing a different aspect of his friends' lives during the autumn season.
One of the emotional peaks of the album, "Punchline" details the slow, painful dissolution of a long-term relationship. The song builds from a quiet acoustic whisper into a soaring, chaotic instrumental crescendo that mimics the heartbreak of a final argument. 12. Plastic Button
