In the summer of 1969, when a group of drag queens, trans women of color, and gay street youth fought back against police brutality at the Stonewall Inn, they did not do so with the neat acronym "LGBTQ" on their lips. They fought for survival. Fifty-five years later, the landscape of queer identity has shifted dramatically, and perhaps no single group has been more central to the evolution of that landscape—or more misunderstood within it—than the transgender community.
